NO WINNERS IN THE ONGOING DRUG WAR
To the Editor:
I'm writing about Doug Wingeier's thoughtful letter: "There have been
too few victories in war on drugs" (Jan. 26, SMN).
I submit that there have no victories in the war on drugs. All drug
dealers or producers arrested are soon replaced because of the
immutable law of supply and demand. We cannot keep recreational drugs
out of our highest security prisons and jails, so how can we expect to
be able to keep drugs out of our country with thousands of miles of
coastline and thousands of miles of international borders?
We cannot.
As long as people want recreational drugs and they are willing to pay
a substantial price for the drugs, somebody will produce the drugs and
somebody else will get the drugs to the willing buyers. This is guaranteed.
