PARENT MUST LIVE WITH PAST MISTAKES
I am writing in response to two recent Post articles I have read regarding
Mark Gatza, who was removed of his coaching responsibilities at St.
Patrick's Catholic School due to a past drug violation.
It is my belief that Anthony Scarfone, principal of St. Pat's, is being
raked over the coals for just doing his job.
I agree with the suggestion that Mark Gatza should apply for a pardon. In my
opinion, Pardons Canada is much more qualified to review Gatza's record and
grant a pardon if it is deserved (which contrary to Gatza's wife's opinion
is much different than "hiding" the offence).
How can an elementary principal be expected to determine which crimes are
"acceptable" and which are not without any other background information?
Scarfone has stated that he will not be reviewing his decision and I believe
it should be left at that.
These newspaper articles can not be good for school morale and Gatza should
realize and admit that he made a mistake and he has to live with the
consequences. That's certainly a message I believe should be conveyed to
today's youth. Let's not forget that he has a son that is not yet in high
school and maybe Gatza should be more concerned about being a role model to
him than ruining a principal's reputation.
The publicity surrounding this issue seems to have little purpose. Gatza's
sons' team did not even lose a coach because of all of this, because Mr.
Scarfone immediately volunteered his time and efforts.
I think that the Gatzas should be very grateful that their son attends a
school that is led by someone with integrity, a great sense of commitment
and school spirit.
