FORMER DENISON OFFICER ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES

Sherman police arrested former Denison police officer David Wayne Stanley
Thursday evening on a charge of possession of more than an ounce of
crystallized methamphetamine inside his vehicle.

Officer Tal Rhew stopped Stanley for a traffic offense on U.S. Highway 82
and, the report said, Rhew was familiar with Stanley. He called Sherman
narcotics officers to the scene. Stanley gave permission to have his car
searched, said Officer Jason Jeffcoat. Rhew assisted with the search and
later with interviewing the suspect.

The search uncovered several packages of meth, plus some MDMA (ecstasy)
tablets, and paraphernalia known to be used to package drugs, including
digital scales and baggies. The officers also recovered what they called
"drug notes," which they held as evidence, and drug paraphernalia.

An unusual item for them to find was a handbook teaching how to stash and
hide drugs in both homes and automobiles. They didn't say if Stanley had
the drugs hidden in accordance with the book. The narcotics officers did
say it was the first of its type for them to see.

The narcotics officers also seized a cell phone and an assortment of tools
from the suspect's pickup, plus about $1,500 in currency on which they will
begin civil forfeiture procedures, according to Sherman investigator Jason
Jeffcoat.

A passenger in the pickup, a 19-year-old female, went to jail on
outstanding traffic warrants, but received no new charges.

Denison police arrested Stanley in October on a charge of possession
between 4-200 grams of crystallized meth, a controlled substance, and
tablets which weren't identified at the time of that report. He was out of
jail on bond when Sherman officers arrested him Thursday night. In the
October incident, he was, like Thursday night's time, stopped on a traffic
violation after which Denison narcotics officers searched his white 1998
Ford pickup.

In the earlier instance, he denied permission for that search, so Sherman
K-9 Officer Tim Gann ran his patrol dog, Oskar, around the pickup. When
Oskar alerted on the truck's camper shell, narcotics officers searched it
and found the drugs inside a briefcase in that camper shell, said Lt. Mike
Eppler at the time.

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, which
is the state agency that tests, certifies and keeps track of state-licensed
officers, said Stanley worked as a police officer with the Honey Grove PD
from Aug. 1, 1992, until Sept. 9, 1993. On Sept. 11, 1993, he went to work
with the Denison PD, TCLEOSE said. He resigned on Aug. 16, 2001.

The TCLEOSE spokeswoman said that Stanley has let his certification drop
since leaving Denison police.
