ON SMOKING, EMPLOYERS GO TOO FAR

I'll never forget, back in the early 1980s, a sign carried by a striking
auto worker during a time when Ronald Reagan thought it would be a great
idea for all workers to be drug-tested. It read, "Pay me 24 hours a day -
then you can test me for what I do 24 hours a day."
Employers are increasingly treating employees as if they own them, on the
job and off.
