APPEALS FILED

Two appeals opposing the operation of a 40-bed detox centre and overnight
shelter at 5409 50th Ave. were filed at city hall by Friday's deadline.

Both appeals will be heard March 10 by the city's subdivision and
development appeal board.

The municipal planning commission gave conditional approval to the project
last month.

Appeals were invited by anyone who felt they were affected by the project.
They can appeal MPC's decision or the conditions of operation MPC put in place.

The identity of the person or people behind one appeal application has not
been made public. At least two residents who live near the site, and a
company that owns commercial property are involved in the other appeal.

Some residents and business owners object to putting the overnight shelter
for people on drugs or alcohol in their neighbourhood. They fear an
increase in crime, and a drop of property value and business.
