ALBERTANS MOURN LOSS OF FOUR RCMP OFFICERS
Albertans throughout the province are mourning the loss of four young
police officers who were fatally ambushed during a raid on a marijuana
grow operation near Rochfort Bridge, southeast of Mayerthorpe, on March 3.
A routine investigation into a marijuana grow operation/ chop-shop,
James Roszko's farm, a man known by police, turned into the senseless
shooting of Constables Peter Schiemann, 25, Lionide Johnston, 32 and
Brock Myrol, 29 all from the Mayerthorpe detachment, as well as
Constable Anthony Gordon, 28 of the Whitecourt detachment.
Mayor Paul Ainscough said, "This is a horrible tragedy. On behalf of
the Town of Drumheller, our heartfelt condolences go out to the
families and friends during their time of loss."
Staff Sergeant Rene Wells of the Drumheller RCMP detachment said, "The
impact of the murder of four officers last week is a tragedy that
affects all peace officers across Canada."
He added that at a time like this, the support that many citizens in
and around Drumheller have shown is overwhelming and very much
appreciated.
Wells said, "This is a strong signal indeed of the fact that the
impact of such a senseless and callous act does extend beyond the
police community."
Premier Ralph Klein issued at press release saying, "The violent
slaying of four Alberta RCMP officers in the line of duty is a crime
of horrific proportions. It saddens me beyond words."
Flags are flying at half mast at the Drumheller Detachment honouring
the loss of the officers.
Wells said, "As peace officers, we must and will remain vigilant in
resolve to stand our ground against evil. God bless those four brave
souls."
Mayor Ainscough said, "The magnitude of this tragedy has reached
Canada wide, our thoughts and prayers are with each family."
RCMP in Mayerthorpe still continue their investigation in this matter.
