THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON LEGALIZING POT
The following letters were received in response to The Sun's four
editorials about marijuana last week.
Don't we already have enough substances that should never have been
legalized for production and trade? One could point to the great harm done
by legal substances such as tobacco and alcohol.
If it's true that marijuana has qualities to treat some sick people, when
nothing else seems to work as well, one might conclude that marijuana
should be used for medicinal purposes only.
What your newspaper suggests is the easy the way out in a society that has
been largely misled into thinking that marijuana is just another harmless
herb. In a society that has been led to believe that "if it feels good, do
it," it's unlikely that marijuana, like alcohol and tobacco, will be used
responsibly.
Too many people are already hooked on a variety of drugs, and it's
irresponsible to suggest we make addiction even easier. If the punishment
had fitted the crime for illegal drug activity over the past years, we
wouldn't had this explosive growth in grow-ops.
A permissive society is one bent on self-destruction.
