ADDICTS NEED PROFESSIONAL HELP

I come from a family that has had more than its fair share of drug
addiction, including heroin.

I can tell you that the goal of issuing clean needles and safer drugs is to
begin a trusting relationship with the user. This bond can lead to more
effective treatment.

Every addict is different. But in most cases they're not thinking too
clearly about the long term.

Expecting addicts to make informed decisions about their futures is a bit
optimistic.

What these individuals need is support.

In my mind at least, reducing the risk of serious diseases and dangerous
impure street drugs is a step in the right direction.

The letters from certain readers offer short-sighted and prejudicial views
surrounding Vancouver's drug problem.

I suggest they let those who understand the issues make the calls.
