CHILDREN NOT HARMED THIS TIME, BUT LET'S NOT TEMPT FATE

This letter is in response to your April 27 headline, "Bottom line: Meth
puts children in harm's way." With regard to this very subject of illegal
drugs impacting the lives and well-being of Asheville's youth, I think the
headline could have read "Bottom line: Mumpower put children in harm's way."

I say this only because of the juxtaposition of the AC-T's very important
coverage of illegal drugs affecting our city's children, with local drug
war advocate and City Councilman Carl Mumpower's recent disregard for an
incident in which he reportedly snubbed a group of drug dealers by asking
for and receiving a standard amount of crack cocaine before proceeding to
exit suddenly in a motor vehicle from a housing project where children reside.

If we are to truly exercise concern for Asheville's children amidst a local
drug crisis, it is not unreasonable to expect that any public officials who
claim particular interest in this problem themselves be accountable every
step of the way.

Rod Mowry,

Asheville
