PRINCE OF POT ACCEPTS FIVE-YEAR JAIL TERM IN CANADA WITH U.S. DEAL
Marijuana activist Marc Emery has agreed to a five-year jail term, to
be served in Canada as part of a plea bargain with U.S. authorities.
Emery was facing extradition to the U.S. after being charged with
conspiracy to distribute marijuana seeds, conspiracy to distribute
marijuana and conspiracy to engage in money laundering.
The charges related to his sale of marijuana seeds to U.S. customers
over the Internet. Emery operates a seed bank, pro-marijuana media
empire and heads the B.C. Marijuana Party.
Emery, 50, was facing an extradition hearing on Jan. 21 and instead
agreed to the deal with U.S. prosecutors that will see him serve five
years in a Canadian jail, with no chance of parole. He faced a
10-year term in the U.S.
As part of the plea, charges against two of Emery's colleagues have
been dropped.
