KIDS FIND POT PLANTS
Training in the DARE program helped a group of young kids identify
more than 60 marijuana plants stashed in some brambles beside their
church on Sunday afternoon.
While at a church picnic at County Line Church at 264 Street and 52
Avenue, a group of kids aged between eight and 10 years old stumbled
upon some suspicious-looking plants hidden in an area overgrown with
blackberries and bushes. Seeing that the unusual plants were marijuana
plants, the group of children went and told their parents.
"They did exactly what they are supposed to do by telling their
parents," said police spokesperson Cpl. Dale Carr.
When the parents asked the kids how they knew the plants were
marijuana, the group answered that they learned that information in
the RCMP's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program that is
offered to every Grade 5 student in Langley.
Police were called and they seized 60 potted marijuana
plants.
"It appears the plants were placed there in the last couple of days to
be stored in the meantime," said Carr. "It appears they tried to
camouflage the plants. The pot was destroyed by police.
More than 1,500 Langley Grade 5 students were taught in the DARE
program in 2004/05.
