FEDERAL POWER PRESERVES NATION

Re "States' rights," letter, June 15: In fifth grade history I was taught
that a strong central government is vital to our survival as a nation.
Think what could have happened when the Southern states tried to withdraw
from the Union, or when Gov. Orval Faubus called out the Arkansas National
Guard in an attempt to prevent integration in Little Rock. Both the
Constitution and the laws of the nation must always override the rights of
an individual state. The Supreme Court made the right decision.
