FIFTH GRADERS FINISH D.A.R.E. CLASSES

A Chatham Tradition Begins

THE CHATHAMS -- Members of the Chatham Township and Chatham Borough
Police Departments joined faculty and parents at the Lafayette School
on June 8, to celebrate the fifth grade Drug Abuse Resistance
Education (DARE) graduation.

"The program was a great success this year with nearly 300 students
graduating from the Lafayette School," said Patrolman Michael Giannone
of the Chatham Township Police Department, who coordinates the program
with fellow township Patrolman Jairo Otalora and Scott Davis of the
Chatham Borough Police Department.

The DARE program is offered to all fifth grade students in the school
district, including students at St. Patrick School and the ECLC School
in Chatham Borough. Officers from both agencies work together to offer
the program to both communities where a combined total of 400 students
participated in the program this year, Giannone said.

The officers gave out several recognition awards during the ceremony.
The award recipients for the essay contest were Katelyn Degan, Alex
Rojas, Patricia Crigler, Chad Gildersleeve, Connor Altizer, Madison
Rubino, Lauren Mulvaney, Anusha Sinha, Haley Gonzalez, Billy Rogers,
Michael Molisani and Quinn Frenzel.

"Each received a gold medal for submitting a great essay," said
Giannone.

The "Best of the Best" essay awards went to Michael Molisano and Haley
Gonzalez. Each received a DARE Recognition Award and a replica stuffed
animal of the DARE mascot, "Darren the Lion," for being the overall
DARE essay winners.

Quinn Frenzel received an award for best display of confidence, "an
important quality to have, especially when in a peer pressure
situation," said Giannone. "His outstanding essay presentation to
those in attendance provided a great example of how to be confident
and the value of having high self-esteem."

The final award of the ceremony, the community service award, went to
Mrs. Randy Raffo, the physical education/health teacher, who also
assists in the coordination of the DARE program at the school.
