COMMUNITY GRANTS WILL COMBAT SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Seven Etobicoke organizations received substance abuse grants this week from
the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.

Grants aid programs focused on substance abuse and related issues.

Hoops Unlimited, a Christian basketball mentorship program, received $1,000
to host a substance abuse awareness seminar, titled "Weed Out 2005" for
approximately 500 youth.

St. Andrew's Catholic Church gained $500 to add a drug awareness and
prevention component to its annual summer camp for children and youth aged 8
to 14.

Family Support & Youth Services of Etobicoke received $500 to develop drug
prevention and awareness workshops and community forums focused on Somali
youth and parents.

Youth Unlimited, a faith-based youth-serving-youth training agency, received
$750 to conduct substance abuse awareness sessions in its shop, where youth
learn auto mechanics on donated vehicles. A second, $500 grant to add a
substance abuse awareness component to its existing programs in north
Etobicoke schools.

Willowridge Information and Recreation Centre gained $500 to increase
substance abuse awareness among youth through drama, workshops and movie
nights. Advocates for Etobicoke Youth received a grant for $1,750 to hold a
youth conference, titled "The Path to Success," held May 6. Youth from five
high schools participated in an assembly, with emphasis on guidance,
leadership, employment and life skills.

Sales of the magazine, "Not for Adults" at all A&P, Dominion and Food Basics
stores throughout Ontario funds the grant program. Grants build
relationships between the community, the police and the Great Atlantic and
Pacific Company.
