MARIJUANA MEDICALLY HARMFUL

In regards to Nolan Finley's June 12 column, "End marijuana hypocrisy
to save nation billions," on the legalization of medical marijuana: I
do not understand why this continues to be an issue. In this country,
any substance that is used for medical purposes needs to go through a
process and then after meeting certain standards is approved by the
Food and Drug Administration. Why would we handle one substance differently?

As the executive director of the access center for those with
substance use disorders (alcohol and other drugs) in Macomb County, I
can attest to the fact that marijuana does negatively impact the
lives of many. Research is clear about the negative aspects of
marijuana -- it is a drug that alters brain chemistry, destroys
motivation and can be detrimental to society in general.
