METH CRISIS
Oregon Solution Targets Sick
The cost of health care cold go up in Oregon following passage by the
state House of Representatives of a bill that would require a
prescription for some cold medicines now readily available over the
counter.
The legislation is aimed at curbing methamphetamine production using
pseudoephedrine in over-the-counter medicines. Many states and pharmacies
have reacted to the meth crisis by restricting access to the medications.
Supporters expect the Oregon bill to pass in the Senate: it has the support
of the governor.
Opponents warn it would mean a costly visit to a physician to obtain a
prescription. Doctors will be taken away from treating more serious
illnesses, offices will become more crowded and waiting times will go
up, just to obtain relieve from the sniffles or common cold consumers
can get now by simply going to their nearest drugstore or supermarket.
