THE PULL OF ILLEGAL DRUGS

I have been following the recent articles and viewpoints concerning
the spate of visible heroin overdoses in the last few weeks with
concern and sadness. It is almost one year since my son tragically
overdosed from other drugs. I struggle every day to understand what
goes through the minds of young adults and teenagers that leads them
down a path so dangerous and life threatening.

The DARE programs in place are wonderful starting points for teaching
our young children the dangers and consequences of drug and alcohol
abuse. Unfortunately, as our children move on to middle school and
high school, the outlet for discussion and learning about this
subject matter is reduced at the most critical time in the
development of their attitudes about drugs and alcohol. Peer pressure
is increased, freedom to explore is expanded and the availability of
these substances is plentiful.

I have decided the best way to make my son's memory last is to create
a foundation, the primary function of which will be to work with
existing drug abuse programs and to educate teenagers and young
adults on the dangers of substance abuse. The Kyle Goldberg Memorial
Foundation has been established for this purpose.

My hope is that by speaking to teenagers and young adults first hand
and working with existing agencies, we can make a difference.
Substance abuse is a very real, very large problem in our community
and all over our country. Lives are at stake, and through visible
continued efforts to teach our children we can reduce the types of
headlines we are all too familiar with.
