"ADDICT" IS JUST ANOTHER STIGMATIZING WORD

LETTER WRITER Aaron Reid (Mailbag, Aug. 9) ought to read Rev. Martin
Niemoller's "they came for the Jews, then the commies, then the trade
unionists," essay. When the Nazis came for Niemoller, there was no one left
to speak for him. "Addict" is just another stigmatizing word like "Jew"
once was. So now they have come for the so-stigmatized cannabis addicts,
Marc Emery spoke up. Reid ought to be grateful that because of Emery, they
won't be coming for Aaron any time soon - if Marc wins. If he is deported,
who will be next? Pastors who perform gay marriage ceremonies?
Satellite-signal thieves? Once emboldened, where do our protectors stop?
