COCAINE SMUGGLERS GET 40-YEAR TERMS IN MIAMI
A judge on Monday sentenced two people involved in a drug conspiracy
to more than 40 years in federal prison for smuggling cocaine on a
Saudi Arabian prince's private jet under the cover of his diplomatic
immunity.
U.S. District Court Judge Jose E. Martinez also ordered Doris Mangeri
Salazar and Ivan Lopez Vanegas to pay $25,000 in fines.
In may, a jury found Mangeri Salazar, the longtime girlfriend of Saudi
royal family member Nayef bin Sultan bin Fawwaz al-Shaalan, and Lopez
Vanegas guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine.
Prosecutors based much of the case on the testimony of turncoat
Colombian drug traffickers.
