TWO VIEWS OF EMERY
Re: The Prince Of Pot Replies, letter to the editor, Aug. 29.
I was shocked at the comparisons Marc Emery made between his so-called
"marijuana culture" and persecuted minority groups like Jews or Cambodians
that were victims of Pol Pot. Not only is this outrageous and offensive, but
it destroys his credibility.
Mr. Emery thinks countries who use proper legislative and law enforcement
procedures against marijuana use and trafficking are the same as Nazis who
slaughtered millions of Jews. Where are the pot-grower's killing fields, Mr.
Emery? How is the persecution of a racial group similar to someone who
chooses to smoke marijuana?
Moreover, the libertarian position espoused by Mr. Emery could easily be
used against any number of outlawed behaviours which the state prosecutes.
Is the state acting like a "Nazi" when it prosecutes someone who claims they
are innately attracted to children in a sexual way and act on that impulse?
What about drug pushers who target children? Any line Mr. Emery draws would
be purely arbitrary and he would therefore become the Nazi he despises so
much.
