LIBRARY FILM REVIEWS PROBLEMS WITH METH

Methamphetamine, also known as "crank," is the number-one problem for
Central America and the Midwestern United States, according to a movie
about the drug Booth Library showed Tuesday.

"Crank: Made in America" is a 2004 documentary filmed in Iowa that followed
the lives of methamphetamine users and the effects the drug has.

The Booth Library chose this film because methamphetamine is a local problem.

"We look for films that are a local and campus interest," said David Bell,
a member of the library committee.

About 10 people attended this film.

Kyle Dietz, a junior math education major, said he attended because he had
heard about the drug problem.

"I was curious on how big it really is," he said.

According to the film, methamphetamine dissolves brain cells and people who
use it "never will be able to enjoy life the way they used too."

Methamphetamine users get addicted and the drug begins to consume their
whole lives, and most of the time users are without jobs and money.

"The film was well done," said Harrison Cole, a freshman piano major. "It
showed that (methamphetamine) is by far the worst drug."

The users tend to have filthy houses, they tear things apart, they have
sores on their bodies, they lose sleep and in most cases they lose weight,
the film said.

Most of the methamphetamine addicts in the film realized the negative
effects of the drug, but no matter how hard they tried they could not stop.

"It was very sad to see all these people imprisoned by (methamphetamine),"
Dietz said.

The film gave the statistic that only 6 percent of methamphetamine users
actually stop and stay sober, which is the smallest recovery rate for any drug.
