MARIJUANA BILLBOARDS GET READERS TALKING
Editor's note: A recent Daily Herald story and editorial about local
attorney Gene Linehan's billboards in Weston generated considerable
discussion. The signs featured a marijuana leaf and offer to defend those
accused of crimes; a sign company took them down after Weston officials and
residents complained that they were offensive and promoted drug use.
The following letters are responses to the controversy: (1 of 5)
I am a resident of Weston and I live within blocks of one of the
billboards. I did take the time to read it and my conclusion was that it
was an ad for Gene Linehan's legal services - not a promotion of drug use.
There are images projected to us that will irritate some people, but not
others. Isn't freedom of speech a constitutional right? It would be a pity
to see actions such as this carried out because of a few people's opinions.
