THE 'VIRTUES' OF POT

The revised message on the billboard promoting passage of the
pro-marijuana initiative I-100 in Denver is just as dubious as the
earlier one but at least it's less graphic.

Under public pressure, sponsors withdrew a proposed board that
included a photo of a battered woman and her abuser, with the slogan,
"Reduce family and community violence in Denver. Vote Yes on I-100."

It failed to mention that the measure would theoretically make it
legal for adults to possess up to an ounce of pot in Denver, although
it wouldn't preempt state law.

The new board has only text that reads, "Alcohol use makes domestic
violence 8 times more likely . . . Marijuana use does not. Vote Yes on
I-100."

That's an uproven claim but it's within the bounds of fair political
debate. And the sponsors are finally willing to concede the measure
has something to do with pot. That's a step forward.
