SEARCH LEADS TO 2 ARRESTS AT SEYMOUR HIGH SCHOOL

Two Seymour High School students were cited on drug-related charges last
week following a routine search at the school.

The unrelated arrests resulted from a prearranged search of the SHS parking
lot and lockers Oct. 14, Detective Lt. Carl Lamb said Friday. The searches
were part of a combined effort of Seymour Police Department and Seymour
Community Schools, Lamb said, in which drug dogs walk past parked cars and
lockers, sniffing for signs of drugs.

Tyler Shippee, 18, Seymour, was cited for possession of marijuana, less
than 30 grams, a misdemeanor; and a 16-year-old Seymour boy was cited for
possession of drug paraphernalia, Lamb said.

Shippee has been involved in sports at the high school, playing football
and basketball last year. He is not on the football team this fall.

Shippee was ordered to appear in Jackson Superior Court on Tuesday. An
appearance was filed by an attorney, and a pre-trial conference was set for
10 a.m. Nov. 1, according to court records.

The 16-year-old boy was cited into juvenile court, Lamb said. The
paraphernalia was found inside a vehicle.

A canine also alerted to the vehicle Shippee had apparently driven to
school, Lamb said, and the teen consented to its search.

"A small quantity of marijuana was found inside the vehicle," Lamb said,
"and he was given a citation."

Lamb said the amount of marijuana involved and a police officer's
discretion can determine whether a person facing a misdemeanor charge is
given a citation or taken to jail for processing.

Arresting officers in the incidents were Officer Bart Bevers and Canine
Officer Ian McPherson.
