CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON ADDICTION

WAILEA - A conference on chemical dependency will be held Dec. 1-2 at
the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort.

The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Gregory Boyle, founder and
director of a youth violence prevention program in East Los Angeles.

The Jesuit priest founded Homeboy Industries, a collection of small
businesses staffed by former gang members, at-risk and gang-involved
youth, an economic development and job training program; and Jobs for
Future, an employment referral center.

C.C. Nuckols, an expert in behavioral medicine and additions
treatment, will address "Healing an Angry Heart: Helping Adolescents
with Anger Management Problems" on the second day of the conference.

Another featured speaker will be Chauncey Veatch, the 2002-03
national teacher of the year, who will explain how "Every Child is a Gift."

Also Dr. Max Schneider, a pioneer in addiction medicine, will speak.

Conference sessions include topics such as "Sustaining Drug Court,"
"Law Enforcement Partnership with Community and School Resources,"
"Pot Talk," "Underage Drinking," and "Treatment of Meth Addiction."

Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona and Mayor Alan Arakawa are scheduled to
address conference attendees.

The conference registration fee is $145 if postmarked by Oct. 31. It
costs $175 after that date.
