COUNCIL SUPPORTS ANTI-DRUG INITIATIVE
Oak Bay council voted unanimously on Monday night to offer its support
to the Crystal Meth Victoria Society (CMVS) and community-based
programs intended to combat the spread of crystal methamphetamine use.
The B.C. government introduced a program at the last Union of B.C.
Municipalities convention that pledged $7 million to assist
communities in dealing with the damage caused by the popular street
drug.
Its use has increased dramatically in the last five years.
With Oak Bay's forthcoming letter of support, the society will be able
to apply for up to $20,000 to run its public awareness and education
programs. The organization will also be working with local governments
in the Greater Victoria region to lobby for a treatment facility for
addicts.
Coun. Allan Cassidy wished CMVS president good luck with his
application, calling crystal meth a "horrible, horrible drug".
