SESS WORKING HARD TO WIN THE WAR ON DRUGS

School Would Like To See Parents Talk To Their Children About Issue

There is some good news when it comes to fighting the ever growing
drug culture in the South Similkameen.

Although it seems like drugs are becoming more of a concern in the
community, staff at Similkameen Elementary Secondary School, are
noticing a decline in the amount of drug related problems in the school.

Alan Stel, vice-principal of Similkameen Elementary Secondary School,
said compared to past years this year they have noticed a significant
decrease in the amount of drug related problems in the school.

"We don't have the same number of students who turn to drugs because
of social problems," he said.

Although there are still problems that do happen, he pointed out the
school is better prepared to deal with them.

"I would say that we are doing a better job in trying to resolves
these issues," he said. "Our staff is more aware of the problems and
are better equipped to deal with them."

Stel pointed out that last year the district hired a drug and alcohol
councillor to work with students to help them over come their
problems. Stel said that the councillor's roll in the school seems to
be working.

"I would say that this school is a safe place for students. I think
most parents and students would agree," he said.

Stel couldn't comment on specific incidents that have happened in the school.

"Under the school's protocol, I can't talk about students or
incidents that have happened in the school."

When it comes to dealing with drug problems, Stel said the best
advice he would like to give to parents is to talk to their children
about what is happening in the school.

"People are becoming more aware of drugs in the community. Parents
should be talking to their children every day about this," he said.
