FIRST INDIAN SWORN IN AS BOLIVIA'S PRESIDENT

Evo Morales, a leftist coca grower who helped topple two predecessors
through violent street uprisings, was sworn in Sunday as the first
Indian president of Bolivia. The former leader of Bolivia's coca
growers union swore to uphold the constitution. Morales, a critic of
U.S. policies, will head a socialist government for at least five
years. He said he would fight druglords who convert the coca leaf into
cocaine but would defend legitimate coca crops used for teas,
medicines and religious purposes in Bolivia.
