PRISON SOLITARY FOR DEPORTED POT ACTIVIST

An American medicinal-marijuana activist who lost a bid to stay in
Canada as a refugee is in solitary confinement in a San Francisco jail.

Steve Kubby has pleaded not guilty to violating his probation in
connection with drug charges.

Lawyer Bill McPike said Kubby has been placed in solitary while
awaiting his next hearing and has lost a lot of weight. He has a rare
adrenal cancer and says he uses marijuana to alleviate the symptoms.

A judge will decide today if Kubby can have access to his medicinal pot.

Kubby left Vancouver last Thursday in compliance with a deportation
order after exhausting attempts to claim refugee status in Canada. He
was arrested immediately after landing in San Francisco.

Kubby, who lived in B.C. since 2001, claimed American authorities
were persecuting him for his advocacy of medicinal use of marijuana.
He also argued he would die if imprisoned without access to pot.
