QUESTIONING JUBY'S MOTIVES FOR DRUG WAR

To the editor:

Tough talk, indeed. While it's no secret that there are hard drugs on
the streets of Peterborough I question the sincerity of Councillor
Bill Juby on this issue.

Coun. Juby has made no secret of his support for the downtown bar
owners and has frequently represented their interests at council.
These interests are not necessarily those of his constituents, but
most certainly are those of his campaign funders.

Fair enough - dance with the one what brung ya. However Coun. Juby's
pre-election grandstanding on an issue that has been present for
years (and has only been exacerbated by much of the work that Mr.
Juby has himself done on behalf of the downtown bar owners) is
tainted by his close relationship to this group of business owners
and begs some questions:

Where are the drugs sold? Where do these out-of-town dealers go to
meet their customers? How many of these businesses, that have seen
their interests supported by Mr. Juby for years, have had their
licenses suspended recently for various breaches of the law?

I live downtown. I work downtown and I'm raising my family downtown.
If Mr. Juby and other citizens are truly concerned about this issue
(and I'm willing to believe that they are), I hope to be consulted
prior to anyone declaring war on anything.

It is my family, not Mr. Juby, that will be caught in the crossfire.
