POLICE SET ABLAZE FRW 22M NARCOTICS
Police in the Biryogo area seized and burnt eight hundred and fifty
kilogrammes of opium worth Frw22 million. Also impounded were one
hundred and fifty litres of diluted methanol, which was being sold to
people as alcohol for consumption.
"I commend the recently elected authorities for this commendable work
after only one week in office; this shows that a lot will be achieved
by the end of their tenure and we pledge full cooperation," Supt.
Jean Claude Kajeguhakwa, the Kigali City police chief, told residents
of the area commonly known as Tarinyota.
"We are tired of these drugs. They have robbed us of our children but
when people are caught selling them, they are only detained for a few
days and after some time they are back on the streets," one Hafsa
Nyirasafari said.
But the police officers, including the police spokesman Supt. Theos
Badege, assured the area residents that those apprehended would be punished.
"I advise the people who have been dealing in this business to invest
elsewhere. We shall not rest until this business is put to an end.We
know huge amounts of money are invested here," Badege told residents
after the narcotics were burnt at the Camp Kigali grounds.
Inspector of police Linda Nkuranga from the Narcotics Department
urged residents in the area to form an organisation that will
cooperate with the police in tracking drugs.
She disclosed that there was another kind of deadly brew made from
foam called 'igisasu' that has dire effects on the consumer.
