END TO GLASS PIPE SALES SOUGHT TO CURB DRUG USE
The School Board Wants Limits On What Stores Can Sell.
Langley School Board is urging Township, provincial, and federal
authorities to stop drug paraphernalia from being sold openly.
Alison McVeigh, board vice-chair, proposed the letter after parents
from Willoughby Elementary School complained earlier this year
[Action wanted on drug paraphernalia, Feb. 21, Langley Advance].
Township officials are already researching a proposal for a bylaw to
address the matter, on instructions from Council through a motion by
Councillor Bob Long [Bylaw to curb sale of crack pipes to kids, Jan.
27, Langley Advance].
Parents there have been angry for more than a year at the owners of
the Willoughby Market [Glass pipes worry parents, Nov. 25, Langley
Advance]. The corner store sells glass pipes and "rose tubes," which
could be used to smoke crack and methamphetamines.
McVeigh said the school district has been working for years on
educational programs that tell students about the risks of drugs.
The board's anti-drug message is brought into question, she said,
when potential drug paraphernalia is available for purchase close to schools.
The letter will be sent to B.C. Attorney General Wally Oppal,
Langley's two MLAs, Mary Polak and Rich Coleman, and Langley MP Mark Warawa.
Trustee Joan Bech said it should be illegal to encourage children to
take drugs at all.
