DEPUTY CHARGED WITH WITHHOLDING INFORMATION TO GET PRESCRIPTIONS

Collier County sheriff's deputies arrested one of their own Thursday
on prescription drug-related charges -- the same officer charged last
month with driving under the influence of medications.

Lt. Scott K. Anderson, 41, was arrested on a warrant charging him with
three counts of withholding information from a practitioner, in an
attempt to obtain controlled substances between Feb. 6 and Feb. 14.

All of the drugs contain opiate derivatives, and are pain management
drugs, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Brigid O'Malley said.

Anderson, a 24-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, was arrested Feb.
15 on a driving under the influence charge after he crashed into
another vehicle while on duty in East Naples.

At the time of his arrest, Anderson's attorney, Donald Day, said
Anderson suffers from a chronic back injury that could have caused the
crash.

The new charges allege Anderson made a request for a controlled
substance from a medical practitioner without telling him or her that
he already received the prescription from another doctor within the
previous 30 days.

Anderson's bond was set at $15,000. He has been suspended without pay
from the Sheriff's Office pending the outcome of a review, authorities
said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted an outside and
impartial review of the evidence in this case, as requested by Sheriff
Don Hunter, O'Malley said.

Anderson was demoted from corporal to deputy in 1989 after he crashed
into the Clam Pass Park gatehouse. Anderson told deputies at the time
that he was drinking and driving, but they didn't ask him to take a
field sobriety test.

The State Attorney's Office didn't file a charge, because they
couldn't prove Anderson was the driver, or that he was impaired.

Anderson's wife also was arrested Feb. 15 in a separate incident
involving prescription drugs.

Roxanne Anderson, 41, was found to be in possession of blank
prescription forms after she nearly crashed her car into a deputy's
patrol car, authorities said.
