PREVENTION BETTER THAN CURE

Re: Don't tell me mandatory detox is a bad idea (March 7).

Should parents have the right to force their drug-addicted children
into detox? The answer is yes.

It is the fundamental and paramount responsibility of the parents to
fend for their children, at least until they turn 18. However, it is
also the moral responsibility of the lawmakers, schools and social
agencies to strictly monitor and administer programs to keep our
children free of drugs and alcohol abuse. After all, they are the
real future of our world.

Prevention is certainly better than a cure. Ironically, the cure may
be too late before the inevitable fatality strikes. The real solution
and strategic onslaught must be a long-term effort with undying
commitment and a financially viable plan. Short-term quick fixes will
not solve this horrendous problem. Society must act now.
