STUDENT ARRESTED, BROUGHT CRACK TO SCHOOL

An eighth-grader was arrested yesterday after bringing crack cocaine
to Creighton Elementary School in the Northeast, school officials said.

It was the latest of several incidents this year - and the second
this week - involving students taking drugs to school.

According to school officials, the student, 13, gave a plastic bag
full of white powder to his teacher on Tuesday and fled the school.

Police did not release the charges they filed last night. But school
officials said the boy will be expelled and assigned to an
alternative discipline school.

In response to the recent drug incidents, school district chief Paul
Vallas has ordered an increase in the number of random searches of
lockers and students' personal property - at all grade levels -
starting today.

Vallas said he has added a 24-hour hot line to report students with
drugs. The hot line, 215-400-DRUG, will be open seven days a week.
The current safety hot line, 215-400- SAFE, also will remain open to
report bullying and other incidents, he said.

"We feel that opening up the second hot line might result in
increased intelligence about drugs in school," he said.

Tuesday's incident began about 3:10 p.m. as a teacher prepared to
dismiss students, said district spokesman Vincent Thompson.

The teacher was walking students from the third floor when the boy
reached into his pocket and showed the teacher a plastic bag full of
white powder, Thompson said. The teacher demanded the bag, which the
student handed over, then fled school, Thompson said.

Officials said police were notified, and the substance was later
determined to be crack cocaine.

Yesterday, after the boy arrived at the school, at Tabor Road and
Foulkrod Street, police were called and he was arrested.

School officials said no other students had come into contact with the drug.

Other incidents involving drugs in schools included:

On Tuesday, 24 bags of crack were found in a hallway at Hartranft
School, 8th and Cumberland streets.

On Feb. 28, a 7-year-old girl took $60 worth of crack to her
second-grade class at Patterson Elementary School in Southwest Philadelphia.

On Oct. 25, a teacher found drugs in a 5-year-old kindergartner's
pocket at Richmond Elementary School in Port Richmond.
