DRUG DOG AT MADISON

MADISON TWP. - A drug-sniffing dog was brought to the Madison School
District on March 3, according to a report from high school principal
Connie Ries.

In her report to the board of education Monday, Ries said the dog went
through the lockers and locker rooms to search for marijuana, alcohol,
prescription drugs, narcotics and gunpowder. The dog only registered
one "hit" inside the school, Ries stated, and that turned out to be
from birth control pills.

Outside, Ries said, the dog sounded an alert on four cars. One car
contained a small bag that may have contained marijuana residue. One
car had what was believed to be gunpowder residue; Ries said the
student driving that car is a hunter. The other cars may have had
residual odors from returning beer cans, Ries' report stated.

Superintendent James Hartley said Tuesday that the suspected marijuana
was turned over to police for testing. He said the drug dog is brought
to the school every year or so "just to keep the students aware that
it can happen." He said the dog seldom finds anything.
