TEEN GETS PROBATION AFTER TERMINAL TERRORIST THREAT

A 19-year-old man who forced the temporary shutdown of the Tsawwassen
ferry terminal last summer after claiming to be a terrorist blames
the episode on his use of marijuana.

Justin Goodfellow, a Saanich resident, pleaded guilty in Surrey
provincial court last Friday to mischief in connection with an Aug.
17, 2005 incident in which he told staff he was a member of the Taliban.

The Taliban is one of the Mujahideen (known as holy warriors or
freedom fighters) groups that formed during the war against the Soviets.

Goodfellow, a thin white male with red hair, was with a friend when
he made the remark after being told not to smoke cigars in the
terminal building.

Police were called to deal with the incident but only one ferry
sailing was delayed for an hour.

Crown lawyer Brian Shaw said Goodfellow also made other bizarre
comments including, "Calm down, I am God. We can communicate through
my eyes."

Noting a doctor's report indicates Goodfellow shows signs of
schizophrenia, defence lawyer Jack Harris said his client suffered a
psychotic reaction as a result of smoking marijuana.

Harris said his client experienced such problems before when smoking
the drug, but Goodfellow's short-lived episodes are never
ill-intended, the lawyer said.

The judge agreed to the joint Crown and defence recommendation for a
conditional discharge, and gave Goodfellow a sentence of one year
probation.

His conditions include not getting off medications he may be
prescribed unless given approval by the court. Goodfellow was also
ordered not to smoke marijuana.
