POT PROTEST EARNS FINE, PROBATION

Three years ago, John Turmel dared the Crown to prosecute him for
carrying 7 lbs. of marijuana to Parliament Hill and lighting a doobie
in protest of what he said were unjust prosecutions.

That prosecution came to an end yesterday with Turmel being sentenced
to three years probation and fined $1,000 for possession for the
purpose of trafficking.

Turmel -- the Guinness world record-holder for most elections
contested and lost -- was also ordered to perform 100 hours of
community service by Justice Paul Belanger.

Waiting Cops

On May 14, 2003, Turmel faxed a manifesto to Crown attorneys,
declaring his intention to bring a bag full of pot to the Hill and
share it with politicians. The RCMP were waiting for him.

Turmel said yesterday he was trying to expose the fact people were
being convicted for possession of drugs, when the law governing
possession had been declared of no force and effect by an Ontario
Superior Court judge.

In a written decision issued March 10, Belanger ruled the decision did
not extend to possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Sought Discharge

"We live in a democracy where protest and dissent are not only
allowed, but in many quarters, encouraged. However, that does not
extend to deliberate breaking of criminal legislation."

Turmel had asked for an absolute discharge, so that he wouldn't have a
blot on his criminal record that might interfere with international
travel and his ambition to one day run for "prime minister of the planet."

His request was denied.

Next up for Turmel is today's provincial byelection in
Nepean-Carleton, where he's running as an Independent candidate.
