DRUG PROOFING' SEMINARS OFFERED

Langley Elementary Schools Host DPYK Talks Throughout April

It's never too early to talk to your kids about drugs. But even the
most concerned parent needs to know the facts in order to help their
children make smart decisions.

How To Drug Proof Your Kids (DPYK) parent workshops will take place
at Langley elementary schools throughout April.

DPYK was created in response to the need of parents to have
high-quality drug education resources. It's based on research that
clearly demonstrates the importance of a healthy family environment,
where high levels of parent involvement can reduce the risk of
harmful drug use by children.

Langley has seen 20 DPYK parent programs to date and continues to
lead the province by equipping parents with relational tools to help
their children in making healthy choices.

DPYK complements what Langley's 1,500 Grade 5 students learn each
school year in the D.A.R.E. program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education.

Children learn how to apply the D.A.R.E. decision-making model,
making healthy choices in risky situations they encounter.

DPYK is applicable to even the strongest and healthiest families,
according to the organization's website.

The program is designed to introduce skills and concepts that will
help improve what parents are already doing, as well as to
incorporate strategies that parents may not yet be aware of.

In short, children don't need to be at an experimental stage of drug
use for families to benefit from this program.

Workshops will be running at Alice Brown Elementary (Monday
evenings), Douglas Park Community School (Thursdays), Gordon
Greenwood and West Langley Elementary Schools (Mondays).

For information call Kirsten Prediger, DPYK coordinator at
