INTERVENE EARLY WITH YOUTH

His Story Is A Cautionary Tale.

"You can never get as high as your very first hit," he said, and the
first few are free. Once you're hooked, you're on your own.

Robb McGirr, one of two school-based prevention officers for Alouette
Addictions, was a police officer in New Westminster, where Miller came
from.

He encountered him in the earlier days of his addiction, and told the
crowd that Miller is an inspiration to him.

McGirr stressed the need for early intervention for youth.

"Early intervention is very, very successful, and it's
cost-effective," he said.

Crystal meth use was a big topic during the evening, but McGirr said
he had some good news.

From talks he has had with students, "I've noticed that crystal meth
is beginning to enjoy a negative reputation with young people," he
said.

And the drugs with the bad reputations are stayed away from, he added.
