THE DRUG PROBLEM
A letter writer says the legalization of drugs will stop the drug
problem. That is utterly ridiculous. Being able to buy tobacco in a
convenience store hasn't stopped lung disease. Being able to buy
alcohol at convenience stores hasn't stopped drunk driving. Having a
state run lottery hasn't stopped gambling. The sexual revolution
hasn't stopped the tragedy of rape.
I don't know where to buy illegal drugs. I could easily find out, but
it still would be harder than buying them at a drugstore or a
convenience store. As it is, I have no desire to "experiment" by
finding drugs on some darkened corner where I worry about who might see me.
It wouldn't be so hard to ignore at some well-lit counter where
well-dressed people with smiling faces can hand the drugs to me.
