LEGISLATORS ON DRUGS?
The Department of Human Resources is getting ready to launch a
drug-testing program of welfare recipients. The DHS believes alleged
welfare drug addiction is a barrier to employment.
What a hallucinogenic, imaginary mis-solution. People seek public
assistance because they lost their jobs. Rather than investing in job
creation, dependable public transportation and affordable child care,
it is much more politically simplistic to fault the victim. If you are
poor, it is your fault, and the DHS believes you are a junkie.
Before drug-testing welfare recipients, I would recommend drug-testing
our legislators.
