WATCH FOR REACTION TO RULING

Re: Vancouver's safe-injection drug site OK: Supreme Court ruling, Sept. 30

Judging from the Supreme Court ruling on safe injection sites, it
would appear that a genuine concern for the health and safety of even
the most desperate of Canadians remains alive in the law.

However, supporters of these sites need to remain on alert that
today's Conservative government routinely ignores better informed
advice to do what it bloody well pleases, all in the name of pandering
to the lowest common denominator of its political base.

Driven by ideology rather than data-based evidence -- witness the
recent omnibus Law and Order bill -- the Harperites can be expected to
quickly find a way around this ruling. Ideologically driven
politicians behave wisely only after they have exhausted all other
irrational alternatives, and in the process overpowered those least
able to defend themselves.
