A MISGUIDED SENSE OF JUSTICE

Re: Pot Growers Face More Jail Than Rapists, Sept. 23.

Comparing the "crime" of growing illegal cannabis with sexually
assaulting children ("a person growing 201 pot plants in a rental unit
would receive a longer mandatory sentence than someone who rapes a
toddler") clearly shows the stupidity of trying to link the war on
drugs with the tough-on-crime agenda by the federal Conservatives.
However, if the purpose is to fill empty Canadian super-jails, then
get ready to fill them with thousands of sick Canadians who presently
have Health Canada Medical Marijuana authorization to grow 15 to 30
small indoor plants. That authorization will be phased out over the
next year or so, due to the proposed changes to the Canadian Medical
Marijuana Program.

An estimated 200,000 (or more) Canadians inhale cannabis for medicinal
purposes. At least half grow their own to control costs and product
quality. The phasing out of the self-grow option will not curtail
demand and supply of recreational and medicinal pot.

It's time to stop the stupidity of this failed and expensive war on
drugs and work towards fully medicalizing pot, then legalizing,
regulating and finally "taxating" it. And we'll cut down on crime at
the same time.
