THE DRUG WAR'S BLITHE ACCEPTANCE OF NEEDLESS DEATHS

In response to Mary Anastasia O'Grady's "A Drug-War Plan Goes Awry"
(Americas, June 20):

This whole operation was so perverse, and the fore-knowledge that
these guns would be used to kill human beings rather than being used
for hunting purposes is so clear, it seems obvious that the
masterminds who approved "Operation Fast and Furious" should be facing
criminal investigation. The plan was to recover the guns, which were
allowed to "walk" by the ATF, at death scenes. None of this makes
sense from a legitimate law enforcement standpoint.

Since this operation was apparently conceived and implemented on the
Obama Administration's watch, it is a mystery to me why President
Obama has not expressed outrage and called for appointment of a
special prosecutor. After all, news reports indicate that the
operation was overseen by a U.S. Attorney's Office. If I am not
mistaken, U.S. attorneys are under the Department of Justice and are
appointed to serve at the president's pleasure.
