VICE MAYOR'S WIFE INJURED IN HEAD-ON CRASH

Other Driver Has Previous Marijuana Charge, Open Alcohol In His Car

Alcohol and drugs may have been a factor in a head-on collision
yesterday that injured the wife of Lexington Vice Mayor Mike Scanlon,
police said.

A Lexus sport utility vehicle driven by Margaret "Missy" Scanlon
collided with a Toyota Camry about 3 p.m. yesterday on Walnut Grove
Lane, just off Winchester Road in rural Fayette County, Lexington
police officer Todd Kleinjan said.

Kleinjan did not identify the driver of the Camry, but said he had
been charged with possession of marijuana. An open alcohol container
also was found in the man's car, but police were still trying to
determine whether the force of the accident could have opened the container.

Kleinjan did not say which driver was at fault in the collision, but
said the crash was under investigation.

"Somebody was not entirely on their side of the road," Kleinjan said.

Both drivers were taken to University of Kentucky Hospital, although
authorities had a difficult time trying to get the man to go to the
hospital, Kleinjan said.

Missy Scanlon was listed in stable condition at UK last night. The
other driver's condition was not known.

Neither driver appeared to have life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The accident occurred where a hill crests in front of a horse farm at
2670 Walnut Grove, not far from the Scanlon home at 2412 Walnut
Grove. Kleinjan said no one witnessed the accident, which spun and
seriously damaged both cars, leaving twisted pieces of the vehicles
scattered across the road. The front driver's-side tire of Scanlon's
Lexus was torn off.
