STUDENTS NEED TO WORK FOR THEIR EDUCATION
In reference to the article "Drugs halt aid for 8,900 students,"
April 17: If these young adults are intelligent enough to ask
somebody else to pay for their education, then they should be mature
enough to accept responsibility for their own education when they use
drugs and get caught. They are not being denied an education; they
are being told they will now have to work for it, like 50 percent of
enrolled college students, instead of having it given to them.
As for the April 17 editorial, "Student-citizen deserves
scholarship," I agree that she does, but my two daughters also should
have been eligible for the 21st Century Scholarship. I am a single
parent who raised two students with 4.0 GPAs who participated in four
sports a year. Because I work I have to pay for their education
instead of having it given to them. If you want the scholarship to be
for all citizens, then make it for all of them.
