SAFETY WARNING AFTER USED NEEDLES FOUND UNDER BRIDGE
A COUNCILLOR is warning residents about the dangers of removing
needles and other drug paraphernalia found discarded in Burton.
The move comes after Burton parish council reported at its latest
monthly meeting that needles, spoons and other medical equipment -
including, insulin packs - have been found near arches under Burton
Bridge.
The items, possibly used for taking heroin, are often found discarded
on the ground after use.
Parish councillors said they had noticed that more needles and spoons,
and even small amounts of blood spatter, were being found under the
archways of the bridge, which was posing a danger to walkers and cyclists.
Michael Rodgers, who represents the Burton ward on East Staffordshire
Borough Council, said the area was used by school children and their
parents, and the needles would pose a serious risk to health if they
were picked up.
He said: "People who drop these items are very negligent and very
stupid to think they can just leave them there. They should take them
to the needle exchange.
"There are one or two areas from where I have received complaints
about the needles and I strongly advise anyone to contact the borough
council to have them removed. When they see any, they should not pick
them up or remove them themselves.
"The council have specially trained people to deal with
that.
"Anywhere that needles are thrown poses a risk to all members of the
public.
It only takes one needle to be dangerous.
"This is happening in an area frequented by children going to school
and their parents. They don't want to see them.
"There are also other areas of Burton where this is happening."
