CODE VIOLATIONS CITED AT HYDROWORLD SHOP IN LANSING'S OLD TOWN

Business Tagged After Attempted Burglary in Old Town

Lansing's first official medical marijuana dispensary is closed after
city officials found building code violations following an attempted
early-morning burglary.

HydroWorld, 407 E. Grand River Ave., was marked Monday morning with a
correction notice from Lansing's Office of Code Compliance, citing a
"hazardous electrical" violation and "new electrical installation
without a permit."

Officials were called after police responded to the dispensary
shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday. A passer-by noticed a large hole in
the building's front window and called police.

Police found a 28-year-old man they believed was armed gathering
items inside. He fled to the basement when police addressed him, said
Lt. Noel Garcia.

Police called a Special Weapons and Tactics, or SWAT, team to the
dispensary, and continued to negotiate with the man until the team
arrived at about 2:30 a.m. The suspect, who is expected to be
arraigned today, was arrested after the SWAT team arrived.

Danny Trevino, owner of five HydroWorld locations including the Grand
River locale, said he wasn't notified Monday of any code violations.

He said he planned to keep the location closed for a while to make
the building more secure and other updates.

The Grand River location's window was broken three times in the past
month, he said.

Trevino, 39, of Lansing, said the suspect from Monday's attempted
burglary was taking jars of brownies made with marijuana. Brownies
have been stolen on previous occasions, he said. He called the
suspect the "brownie bandit."

The Grand River location sees about 45 patients on a busy day, he said.

"(The dispensary) needs work. It needs to be more secure, more safe,
brought up to code," he said. "I want to do some things with it. It
has a back door, maybe I'll make it a little bit nicer."

Messages left with the city's code compliance office were not returned Monday.
