ADRIAN TOWNSHIP IMPOSES MEDICAL MARIJUANA FACILITY MORATORIUM
ADRIAN TWP., Mich. - Adrian Township trustees voted unanimously
Monday to impose a six-month moratorium on the opening of any
facilities for dispensing medical marijuana in the township.
The moratorium will allow the township to develop a zoning ordinance
to control such facilities, said supervisor Jim Koehn, who
recommended the moratorium.
The township action follows similar moratoriums imposed by Tecumseh,
Madison Township and Adrian.
An important factor in crafting the ordinance will be avoiding
lawsuits under Michigan's medical marijuana law, approved by voters
in 2008, Koehn said.
That law allows certified patients having certain debilitating
medical conditions to grow and use a limited amount of marijuana.
Registered medical marijuana caregivers are allowed to grow a limited
number of marijuana plants and distribute marijuana to not more than
five patients.
In some locations, including Adrian, establishments have opened where
certified medical marijuana patients can receive marijuana from
certified caregivers.
"You can't not have it, but you have to find a place to put it,"
township supervisor Jim Koehn told the board.
In other business, the board postponed any action on whether to allow
Sunday packaged liquor sales until the Lenawee County Board of
Commissioners acts on whether to allow packaged liquor sales at all
on Sunday, Koehn said.
A new state law in 2010 allowed local governments to permit Sunday
morning liquor sales, but confusion over what the local governments
had to do to allow the sales left Lenawee County without Sunday
packaged liquor sales.
